Quick Start: Auto-Created Attributes from Integrations

When you import from Shopify or another connected platform, Merchkit automatically creates attributes from your existing fields and metafields. Here's how to find them and use them.

Quick Start: Auto-Created Attributes from Integrations

When you connect Merchkit to Shopify or another platform, you get a head start: Merchkit automatically creates attributes from your existing product fields and custom metafields. This is the fastest path to setting up your data structure.

What Gets Auto-Created?

When you import from an integrated platform, Merchkit generates attributes for:

Standard product fields — title, description, price, vendor, product type, tags, handle, and other native fields from your source platform

Custom metafields — any custom fields or metafields you've defined in Shopify or your source system are mapped to Merchkit attributes automatically

This means if you already have a "Material" metafield in Shopify, it will automatically appear in Merchkit as an attribute.

Finding Your Auto-Created Attributes

  1. Open Workspace → Attributes in your sidebar
  2. Make sure Products is selected in the entity type dropdown
  3. Look through the table — your auto-created attributes will be listed there

You'll typically see attributes like:

  • title (product title)
  • description (product description)
  • price (product price)
  • vendor (vendor name)
  • Custom fields you created in your source platform

What to Do Next: Review and Enable AI

Auto-created attributes are a starting point, but you'll want to review and configure them:

  1. Review the field types — Check that each auto-created attribute has the correct field type (Text, Number, Image, etc.)

  2. Enable Use AI where needed — For attributes you want Merchkit to enrich or generate, click the attribute to open the Configure Attribute panel and toggle Use AI on

  3. Customize prompts — If an auto-created attribute has a default prompt, you can modify it to fit your needs. For example, if you auto-created a "short_description" attribute, you might customize its prompt to: "Generate a compelling product description under 100 characters based on the product title and full description."

  4. Leave others as-is — If you want to keep an auto-created attribute as a reference field (not AI-generated), leave Use AI off

For Users Who Imported via CSV

If you imported your products via CSV rather than through an integration, skip this article. Your attributes aren't pre-created, so go directly to Configuring an Attribute for AI Enrichment to create your first attributes manually.
